From Six Colonies to One nation - Did you know?
- Federation is when a number of colonies unite and join together to form a new nation.
-USA United States began as English colonies and gained independence 200 years ago.
- England was known as the 'mother country'.
- Our states prior to 1901 were part of Britain.
- Colonies had their own powers, own parliaments and own laws. Any law had to be passed by the British parliament.
- Britain controlled the colonies laws on defence, trade, foreign affairs. Armies were controlled by Britain.

- The gold rush brought many changes: immigrants from Ireland, China, Germany, Italy and the US. They had new ideas about the ways the colonies should be governed.
- The only people allows to vote were men who owned large land.
- 1854 Eureka stockade the miners stood up for their rights and protested against their licence fees. This results in the right for all men to have a vote.
- Gold rush stopped the convicts coming. Many free immigrants came for the gold and became the majority of the population.
- NZ was enthusiastic for Federation but pulled out.
- WA was NOT keen but then joined at the last minute. WA could have been another nation.
- Referendums were held to vote for Federation.
-1901 -Jan. 1 Australia is proclaimed a nation and Edmund Barton is sworn in as Australia's first prime Minister.
WHY FEDERATE? - Did you know?
- Federation promoted the idea that Australian Colonies and New Zealand should come together and unite as one nation.
- Two main events promoting Federation was the advancement in Communication between the colonies (telegraph lines, railway systems - politicians could meet more regularly) and the threat of invasion from other nearby nations.
- A combined defence force was necessary to protect Australia from invasion.
- Tariffs (taxes on good brought into a colony) were expensive and inconvenient.
- All colonies had a common background, spoke the same language, represented the same country in international sports
- Australian kids were learning the same national anthem, songs and stories.
Referendums-Did you know?
- Changes to the constitution can only happen when citizens of Australia vote in a referendum.
- A referendum is like a ballot with the questions Yes or No.
- For a referendum to be successful a majority of people must vote yes for the change and also have a majority of yes votes in at least 4 of the six states.
- Low success rate. between 1901 - 2014 there has been 44 proposals and only 8 have been successful.
- In 1967 over 90% of Australians voted yes to allow Aboriginal people to have citizenship rights.
